Axel Brown is a trailblazing bobsleigh pilot whose journey from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, to the icy tracks of international competition embodies resilience, innovation, and national pride.
Born on 2 April 1992 to a British father and a Trinidadian mother, Axel Brown’s athletic pursuits began with American football, playing for the GB Lions U18s and later for the Colorado State Rams in the NCAA Division I. He also earned national Silver and Bronze medals in Taekwondo. Inspired by the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, he ventured into bobsleigh that same year. Initially competing as a brakeman for Great Britain, Brown transitioned to the pilot seat in 2019, establishing his own team, Axe Racing, to navigate the sport on his terms. .
Facing challenges within the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association, Axel Brown embraced his dual heritage, obtaining Trinidad and Tobago citizenship in 2021. He revitalised the nation’s dormant bobsleigh programme, leading the team to its first Winter Olympics appearance in two decades at Beijing 2022. Alongside teammate Andre Marcano, and later Shakeel John due to injury, the duo achieved a 28th-place finish—the highest ever for Trinidad and Tobago in Winter Olympic history. .
Axel Brown’s leadership continued to yield historic results. In November 2022, he piloted the team to a Bronze medal in the four-man event at the North American Cup in Park City, marking the Caribbean’s first podium finish in bobsleigh. Subsequent achievements include a 13th-place finish in the IBSF World Cup two-man event and a 20th-place finish at the 2023 World Championships in St. Moritz.
Beyond the track, Axel Brown is a motivational speaker and entrepreneur, sharing insights on perseverance and innovation. His hobbies encompass creative pursuits, including filmmaking and photography, as showcased on his Instagram (@theaxelbrown).
